Rain of cobblestones and tear gas, many broken windows: the Paris parade of May 1, which gathered 40,000 protesters, quickly degenerated. Several hundred "radicals" clashed with the police, causing degradations, but without making Paris the "capital of the riot" as announced.
Between 150,000 and 300,000 people demonstrated Wednesday in all of France, in a good atmosphere in the region.
In the face of the announced risk, the government had taken out heavy artillery with a large police force. Some 7,400 police and gendarmes were mobilized in Paris, who carried out a large number of preventive controls: 19,785 in Paris, according to the police prefecture.
